Chances of an attack against Syria are likely to subside after the recent statement by the Syrian Foreign Minister that his country:
welcomes Russia’s proposal for it to place its chemical weapons under international control and then dismantle them quickly to avert U.S. strikes.
Although much remains to be seen about the final details of the deal, at least in Israel, such an announcement is likely to be welcomed for two reasons.
1- It will force Syria to part with some of its most dangerous weapons. This is definitely to Israel’s advantage.
2 – The fact that Assad is backing down because he was threatened with an attack is likely to be great news for Prime Minister Netanyahu. For years he has advocated threatening Iran militarily in a clear and unequivocal manner in order to force it to part with its nuclear program. His stance could now receive a major boost.
Will be updating this post as the situation develops.
