You don’t have to be an Iranian, Israeli or from any other nationality to know that abuse of Women’s rights affects us all, be it directly or indirectly. It hurts persons, families, and entire societies. Women’s rights is human rights, and must be protected.
One of the ways which Women’s rights and children’s rights are abused, including in parts of the Middle East is through Female genital mutilation (FGM).
Here are just four key facts (among others) about FGM by the World Health Organization (WHO):
- Female genital mutilation (FGM) includes procedures that intentionally alter or cause injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons.
- The procedure has no health benefits for girls and women.
- Procedures can cause severe bleeding and problems urinating, and later cysts, infections, infertility as well as complications in childbirth increased risk of newborn deaths.
- More than 125 million girls and women alive today have been cut in the 29 countries in Africa and Middle East where FGM is concentrated.
The Guardian newspaper in London has embarked on a campaign to raise awareness about FGM.
Please watch this video and sign the petition at the end of the video which calls for schools in the UK to teach risks of female genital mutilation (FGM).
