Mahmoud Abbas should stop lying

Mahmoud Abbas has lied on two occasions recently. Lies which inflame the current tensions between Israelis and Palestinians.

Lie number 1 –

According to Yediot Ahronot, as part of his speech on Wednesday night President Abbas stated:

“We have said it clearly: We will not accept a change in the status quo at al-Aqsa Mosque that would damage its sanctity and its character.”

This is a lie. Despite a number of controversial visits by a number of Israeli politicians to the Temple Mount compound, there is no plan whatsoever for Israel to change the status quo regarding the Al Aqsa mosque and its surrounding area which have always been under the authority of the Waqf Islamic Council.

I am against the visits by a number of right-wing Israeli politicians to the Temple Mount area adjacent to the Al Aqsa mosque, but this does not mean that Israel is looking to change the status quo there.

Lie number 2 –

According to the same report:

Abbas also emphasized that the Palestinians would not surrender to the “Israeli aggression” against the Palestinian people, their holy places, homes, and the “executions of children like Ahmed Manasra,” referring to the 13-year-old who conducted a stabbing attack in Pisgat Ze’ev.

Ahmed Manasra was not executed. In fact, he is very much alive and recovering in an Israeli hospital, after having stabbed two Israeli children.

I support peace with the Palestinians and for years I have said that we should, in fact, cooperate with Mr Abbas. But his incendiary lies are delegitimizing him in an unprecedented manner with those who would like Israel to try and reach a peace deal with him.
