Yossi Alpher served at the Mossad for a number of years.
In 1979, he was an Iran analyst at the Mossad, when former Iran PM Shahpour Bakhtiyar asked the Mossad to assassinate Ayatollah Khomeini.
Yossi recently wrote a very interesting book which describes Israel’s “Periphery” doctrine in the 60s and 70s. In the book he describes how Israel established relations with countries on the periphery of the region such as Iran, Turkey and Ethiopia, in order to send a message to “core” countries (Israel’s Arab neighbors who were threatening Israel). He also describes how some Israelis deluded themselves when it came to the Shah and how the Shah used his relations with Israel to serve Iran’s interests – to his credit.
In a recent interview with BBC Persian (In English), Yossi Alpher describes his experiences and the recommendations of his book.
